DR. SYAMA PRASAD MOOKERJEE ARCHIVE

INTRODUCTION

In the grand tapestry of twentieth-century India, few figures command a presence as colossal or an intellect as incandescent as Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee (06.07.1901–23.06.1953). A titan of statecraft and a scholar of profound erudition, he traversed a turbulent national landscape with an unyielding devotion to the ideal of a unified motherland. He was a visionary who did not merely witness the unfolding of history, but rather, with the sheer force of his convictions, sculpted its very trajectory.

Born into the cultural aristocracy of Bengal, Dr. Mookerjee was a prodigy nurtured in the cradle of high thought. He ascended to the prestigious office of Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta at the exceptionally tender age of thirty-three, infusing that venerable institution with a revitalized zeal for cultural renaissance. Yet, the serene halls of academia could not long contain a soul destined for the tempest of national politics. Driven by an ardent patriotism, he stepped into the political arena, transforming into a formidable bulwark against the forces of partition and cultural fragmentation.

As a magnificent orator whose eloquence could stir the deepest recesses of the human spirit, his voice resonated with prophetic clarity during the dawn of Indian independence. He served with distinction as Independent India’s first Minister for Industry and Supply, laying down the foundational stones of the nation’s industrial architecture with masterstrokes of administrative genius.

However, his definitive chapter was written through his commitment to democratic pluralism and national integration. His most defining geopolitical legacy is the pivotal role he played in the carving out and creation of West Bengal in 1947 when India achieved her independence but at the great cost of the partition. His ultimate crusade unfolded in the valleys of Jammu and Kashmir, where he fiercely championed the cause of complete constitutional unification. It was there, in 1953, that he laid down his life in custody, cementing his legacy as a martyr for national unity—a luminous, undying beacon of integrity, intellect, and indomitable spirit.

Remembering Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee

In order to celebrate the sustaining legacy of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the state of West Bengal observed “Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Fortnight” from 23.06.2026 to 06.07.2026, the dates which mark his death and birth anniversaries respectively (vide Govt. memo No. ED-126/2026, dt.17.06.2026). Gurudas College also played her due part in this state-wide observation of the life and contributions of the man of titanic capabilities. During the mentioned period, the College celebrated “Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Smriti Paksha” (“ড. শ্যামাপ্রসাদ মুখোপাধ্যায় স্মৃতিপক্ষ”) to remember the legacy of Dr. Mookerjee. On 23.06.2026, Tuesday, the fortnight long observation was inaugurated at the Rajendralal Sabhagriha (G-1) in the presence of the faculty members, non-teaching staff and students of the college. The inaugural lamp was lit by the Principal. She then paid her homage to the memory of the great educationist and statesman by offering a garland of flower to his photograph and thereafter she was followed by other members of the college staff and students. In her welcome note the Principal, while remembering the contributions of Dr. Mookerjee as a prominent modern Indian intellectual rooted in the cultural heritage of India, laid out a tentative schedule of events to be organised by the college during the celebratory fortnight. Dr. Shantanu Basu, the IQAC Coordinator, recounted Dr. Mookerjee’s various achievements as a scholar, educationist and politician and emphasised on the exemplariness of his prismatic career that marks him as a stalwart standing apart.

In order to remember the legacy of Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee as a distinguished educationist and political figure, a Memorial Lecture focussing on his relevance in contemporary India was organised on 06.07.2026, the day marking his 125th birth anniversary. On the same date the College also inaugurated an exhibition of archival materials on him. The archive, curated by the College Library, would function both online and offline. Under the leadership of the Principal, Dr. Mausumi Chatterjee, various cells and Departments of the College, notably the IQAC, Unmeshana the Cultural Cell, the NSS and the Library, worked in close collaboration to make the event a success.

ABOUT THE ARCHIVE

Gurudas College was adverse to the idea of confining this remembrance of this great personality only within a fortnight. As a result, a collection of archival materials on Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, curated by the Library of the College, was set up as a part of the fortnight-long observation. The College is indebted in this regard to the State Directorate of Archives, West Bengal, the institution which was kind enough to share some of their treasured materials with the College. The aim of this growing archive is to dissipate knowledge about the persona, life and contributions of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee among students and to say so any enthusiast. It also aims at serving as a sustainable pool of resources to cultivate knowledge on Dr. Mookerjee. The Archive functions both online (webpage link) and offline (at Gurudas College Library). This Archive was inaugurated by in the presence of the faculty members and students the Principal on 06.07.2026, Monday. It is significant that the date also marked the 125th birth anniversary of the doyen (and also the conclusion of the memorial fortnight), which the College celebrated in a befitting manner.
